Overview
The Doctoral Program in Economics underwent a major reorganization in 2023, and the new program is organized in an international style and follows Western standards. It aims to teach students how to carry out high-quality economic analysis which helps decision makers to create good policy on the governmental and enterprise level. They also learn how to write research papers that can ultimately be published in high-quality academic journals. The program is built on the expertise of established researchers and newly hired international faculty.
The program is organized around the following modules:
Core module. In the core module, students study four core subjects: microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and causal data analysis. Students coming from high quality MA programs can use a fast track and jump the core courses.
Field module. The program has four fields: theory, empirical research, finance, macroeconomics. To complete a field, students need to complete 3 field courses. In addition, they must complete another 3 courses.
Research module. Students will gradually transfer from coursework to individual research. Upon entry, they will be assigned a mentor, who will guide them through the first year. At the beginning of the second year, students get their final advisor (or two co-advisors). From the beginning of the program, students attend research seminars and present their research ideas at the Doctoral Seminar, where they can get advice from the faculty and outside experts. At the complex examination, students present a detailed research plan.
At the end of the second year, students take a complex examination, which is based upon the field courses. At the exam, students also present a detailed research proposal.
